Sound Control and Acoustic Information

Poor Acoustics has been a phenomenon of many public spaces. Typically today’s interiors have many hard reflective surfaces creating a need for sound absorption. Proper sound control acoustics need to be introduced to reduce the noise level. Most people accept noise as normal without being aware there are reasonable acoustic solutions and sound control strategies to manage the problem. To correct these problems consideration needs to be given to the shape, size and volume of the area, the surfaces finishes, the type of activities, the sound system and the budget.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Acoustical and sound control solutions are most cost effective when they are considered in the initial stages of the design. Whether designing an office space or a home theatre, consideration need to be given to the quality of the sound in the room and how you would like the environment to feel acoustically when it is being used.

Excessive noise, high pitched sounds or unclear listening environments can be corrected. Following the applications of the appropriate acoustic treatment, people remark on the difference in sound quality of the area. Good sound control and acoustic environment reduces stress, distractions and frustrations.

 N.R.C. Noise Reduction Coefficient

NRC is a scalar representation of the amount of sound energy that will be absorbed upon the sound striking a particular surface.  It is most commonly used to rate general acoustical properties of acoustic ceiling tiles, acoustic baffles, banners, office screens, and acoustic wall panels.  Sound frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz are used to determine the NRC which is a numerical value of how well a surface material is absorbing the sound energy.

Sound Transmission

When the noise or sound problem is between two areas, this means it is a sound transmission concern.  The effectiveness of a wall or ceiling to stop sound from passing through is determined by the wall or ceiling structure.  To create speech privacy and noise control between two areas, the walls or ceiling have to be built correctly.  The surface may need to be remedied structurally and all sources of air leakage need to be sealed.

Sound Absorption

When it is a noisy room or space, this means it is a sound absorption concern, and measures will need to be taken for proper sound control. When the incidence of sound or noise hits hard surface walls, floor or ceilings, it is reflected and amplified in the space which has all hard surface finishes.  By adding sound absorbing material in the appropriate location, the sound waves are absorbed and not reflected thus reducing the reverberation.  The more a material is fibrous the better the absorption.  When the proper amount of treatment is use within a space, you will notice clarity of sound for speech and music.

When designing a home theatre, firstly you need to provide good sound control isolation for the home theatre room so the sound does not transfer throughout the house.  Careful attention need to be given to stop the sound from passing through the walls into the neighboring room and through the ceiling to the room above.  Hard surfaces with no air leaks need to be designed.

After the structural considerations are taken care of, then the room interior can be designed.  The amount of acoustic treatment to be installed in the room is affected by the room’s size and shape and the location of the speakers. A combination of ceiling and wall sound absorbing treatment, in different thickness, will need to be applied in the right location in order to achieve proper quality of sound and value for your speakers.

With the correct amount of sound absorbing treatment in the room, the sound system will provide you the best of sound for your listening experience.
